What Calgary small businesses get wrong about their first website

I've talked to a lot of Calgary shop owners about their websites — what they have, what they wish they had, what went wrong the first time around. The same five mistakes come up again and again.

The Calgary skyline silhouette, including the Calgary Tower, with a jagged crack running through a burst of colour ink behind it, representing common first-website mistakes.

Mistake 1: Going with the cheapest option and getting a template

The lowest quote usually means the least custom work — a template with your logo swapped in and stock photography standing in for your actual shop. It's not a scam exactly, but it's also not really "your website." Customers can tell. There's a real difference between cheap and no upfront cost — one cuts corners, the other just changes when you pay.

Mistake 2: Paying a deposit before seeing anything

This is the one that actually hurts. A deposit changes hands, a few emails go back and forth, and then things go quiet — half a website, no site, and no easy way to get the money back. It happens more often than people admit, and it's the single biggest reason Calgary owners tell us they were nervous to try again. It's also completely avoidable: if a studio won't show you the finished result before asking for money, that's the risk you're taking on.

Mistake 3: No local SEO at all

A nice-looking website that never shows up when someone searches "[your service] Calgary" is a website doing nothing. We regularly meet shop owners who spent real money on design and never once considered whether Google could actually find them. Local SEO isn't an extra — it's the part that makes the rest of the investment pay off.

Mistake 4: Treating it as a one-time project

A website isn't a plaque you hang once. Hours change, offerings change, seasons change — and a site that can't be updated without a change-fee invoice or a call to a freelancer who's moved on quietly goes stale. The businesses that get the most value from their website are the ones who can actually touch it.

Mistake 5: Underestimating what it actually costs

Owners often go in expecting a few hundred dollars and end up quoted thousands with a deposit up front — or they go the other way and settle for far less than the business actually needs, because the honest number felt out of reach. Knowing the real range going in (we cover that here) makes it much easier to evaluate any quote you get.
